Abstract

As digital technologies become increasingly embedded in workplaces, their impact on the physical health of older workers remains underexplored. This scoping review aims to synthesize existing evidence on how digital technology affects the physical health of workers aged 50 and older. Conducted according to PRISMA-ScR guidelines and based on the Population, Concept, and Context (PCC) framework, the review included peer-reviewed English-language studies from seven major databases. Studies focused exclusively on mental health were excluded. Eighteen studies published between 2012 and 2024 were included, primarily from Europe and Asia. The findings span six physical health domains: eye health, musculoskeletal health, metabolic and cardiovascular health, workplace sound exposure, and user experiences with new technologies. Negative outcomes were frequently associated with prolonged screen use, including eye strain, musculoskeletal complaints, and hearing-related issues. In contrast, some technologies were linked to health benefits such as improved weight management, cardiovascular function, and physical activity levels. Overall, digital technologies present both challenges and opportunities for supporting healthy ageing in the workplace. The results underscore the need for targeted workplace interventions and ergonomic practices to mitigate risks and enhance the physical well-being of older workers in increasingly digitalized environments.
