Abstract.-

Two unexpected developments in divorce rates have occurred recently:  A decline in divorce among younger adults and an increase in divorce among older adults.   This presentation will describe these developments and assess possible reasons for them, such as the increasing selectivity of marriage, the emergence of a new marriage bargain, and the aging of the divorce-prone baby boom cohort.    It will also examine why social scientists failed to anticipate either of these developments and what the implications are for how to theorize about demographic trends.
